Parker Millsap Concert 5/31/18
Graham Craycraft
Parker Millsap is a 25 year old Oklahoma native who, with the release of his third studio album, is a bonafide wunderkind. Although still relatively unknown and growing his first three albums, the first of which he released when he was 20, are lyrically clever, exciting, thought provoking, and all around outstanding. His newest album released on May 4 2018 is titled Other Arrangements and brings another dose of electricity to his collection.
I went to see him at Southgate House Revival in Newport, Kentucky with some family on the 31st. Southgate is a small venue turned from church to concert hall, but still with the original stained glass windows, that puts up small and upcoming rock, folk, and alternative artists. I had been there once before to see Justin Townes Earl and so I already knew how nice and intimate the venue was. Chairs set up on two sides for those who wished to sit, and an open floor area right up to the stage that allowed the audience to get right up on the action. Long time singer-songwriter Travis Linville started the show for Millsap playing a half hour set with relaxing story style songs that was pleasant enough to whet our appetites. Linville and Millsap knew each other before this show and before Millsap's career even started when Linville gave guitar lessons to a young Parker at the age of 9.
Millsap opened with his heart-pounding song Fine Line that set the tone for the rest of the show. Getting right down to business he talked very little, but thanked the crowd quite a lot. The show consisted of 90% ear popping vocals from Millsap with 3 or 4 songs that relaxed the crowd and gave a little break in the action. The vocals were intense and satiating and played well with the fiddle, bass, percussion, and self played guitar. The entire show felt like one explosive rock bomb with highlights of Fine Line, Pining, The Very Last Day, and my personal favorite of the evening, Hades Pleades. The voice made sound effects and guitar from Millsap carried this song to new heights live. The crowd cheered and danced like it really was the very last day and they may be going to "heaven... or to some place else," but their was no grieving. Millsap told the crowd he would not do a fake encore and just remained on stage to perform Gotta Get to You and then left stage. The crowd, however, was not satisfied with that and cheered him back for a real, good ole fashioned encore and Millsap delivered with a song I had not heard yet, but loved instantly called Hesitation Blues.
The concert was amazing and powerful and left me excited for this young man's career. I know I am younger than him, but still he is just a kid and an extremely talented kid at that. I think this may be the last time we see Parker Millsap at a venue as small as Southgate House, and even though that saddens me, I am happy and hoping he is filling out thousands of seats in no time at all.
Here is the full set list for this concert. Give him a listen and let me know what you think.
